The OPIMA 1.1 specification has been approved!

The Open Platform Initiative for Multimedia Access (OPIMA) has been set up to develop specifications enabling a consumer to obtain a receiver and begin to consume and pay for services, without having prior knowledge of which services would be consumed, in a simple way such as by operating a remote control device. Click here for an explanatory drawing.
The OPIMA platform is targeted at providing value-chain participants the ability to acquire, supply, process and consume multi-media services on a worldwide basis in accordance with the rights associated with these services. OPIMA specifically addresses intellectual property management and protection.

Status

OPIMA operates in the Industry Technical Agreement (ITA) program of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) based on a Charter. See the

You will be billed 500 or 400 CHF by the IEC depending on whether you choose to be a Full or an Associate Member.

Workplan

The first phase of the OPIMA workplan has been completed with the approval of specification 1.0. A new version 1.1 of the specification has been released on 00/06/29. You can consult the file with revision marks added to the 1.0 specification.

11th	Has been held in Torino on 2000/06/26-27
10th	Has been held in Torino on 1999/10/11-13
9th	Has been held in Vancouver, CA on 99/07/12-14.
8th	Has been held in London on 99/04/28-30. Purpose of the meeting was to make a review of the specification produced in New York. Further the meeting agreed to start a a validation of the specification. The OPIMA validation ad hoc group will develop a software model of the elements that constitute the OPIMA platform: the application, the OPIMA VM, and the IPMP systems.
7th	Has been held in New York, NY on 99/03/31-04/02. Purpose of the meeting is to produce the first draft of the complete OPIMA specification. A photographic tour can be found here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

5th	Has been held in Morristown, NJ, US on 99/01/13-15 sponsored by AT&T Research. Purpose of the meeting was to produce ver. 0.3 of the specification.
4th	Has been held in Amsterdam, NL, 98/11/10-12 sponsored by Mindport. The meeting has produced version 0.2 of the specifications. Not without discussions (1, 2, 3, 4) and work at dinner (5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
3rd	Has been held in Santa Clara, CA, USA on 98/09/09-11, sponsored by InterTrust. The meeting considered the responses to the Call for Proposals and produced version 0.1 of the specifications. Here is a photographic account of the meeting.
2nd	Has been held in Paris at Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie à La Villette, Paris on 11-13 May, sponsored by Alcatel. The meeting has produced a Call for Proposals.
1st	Has been held on 5-6 March 1998 in Turin, Italy, sponsored by CSELT. Forty individuals attended the meeting and approved a set of resolutions. In the city of Turin, surrounded by mountains and cars, delegates worked hard during the day but strange things (1, 2, 3, 4) happened at night. Everything was under the supervision of Mr. X

MPEG	The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a working group of ISO/IEC in charge of the development of international standards for compression, decompression, processing, and coded representation of moving pictures, audio and their combination.
AICI	The Advanced Interactive Content Initiative (AICI) intends to develop interactive content specifications for user devices to offer a range of basic through advanced interactive applications using 3D as well as 2D content, in stored and streamed fashion.
NDS CMP site	The NDS CMP site collects several valuable pieces of information related to Content Management and Protection (CMP). This includes what is sometimes called copy protection or copyright protection, plus security support for distribution and payment models, such as pay-per-view.
